Apple is planning to greatly expand the satellite connectivity feature in its iPhone models.
This information is highlighted in a new report by Apple analyst Mark Gurman of Bloomberg.
According to the report, through these new Satellite features, users can use Apple Maps without a Cellular or Wi-Fi connection and can send pictures through the Messages App.
In the future, the technology will be further improved, so that the connection to the satellite can be established from indoors without having to point the phone at the open sky.
According to Gurman, Apple is creating a framework for developers to allow third-party apps to add satellite connectivity if they want.
The report also states that there are currently no plans to launch Satellite Phone Call, Video Call, or Web Browsing.
Implementing most of these advanced features will reportedly require major infrastructure improvements at Apple’s current satellite partner Globalstar.
According to reports from The Verge and MacRumors, Globalstar is currently in acquisition talks with SpaceX, which could affect the progress of the plan.
While Emergency SOS service via Satellite is currently free, users may pay directly to Satellite Service Providers—Apple—for more advanced features in the futureIt has such plans, Gurman noted in his report.
