
Today, 12th February 2026, Bangladesh is holding the 13th National Parliamentary Election—an important referendum is also underway. This is the country’s first fully contested election since the 2024 political reshuffle. Long queues of voters have been seen in various centers of the country since morning. According to the Election Commission, polling is going on from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
The then government fell after the mass protests of 2024. Elections were then held under the interim administration. After a long time, some major political equations have changed. In particular, the Bangladesh Awami League (founded in: 1949) is not participating in this election, which is a significant event in the electoral history of the country.
On the other hand, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), founded in 1978, has entered the field with full force. The founder of the party was President Ziaur Rahman. The current leader is Tarique Rahman.

Major cities like Dhaka, Chattogram, and Rajshahi are facing several heavyweight candidates.
The number of independent candidates is also significant. Many are competing for local popularity.

This year’s vote is accompanied by a referendum, where a proposal to amend the constitution is put to the voters. Discussions include—

Voter turnout is promising since morning. The turnout of first-time voters is impressive. Security is also tight—Police, Rab, and Bangladesh Army are deployed in important centers.

This election will not only form the government—it will determine the political future of the country. After a long time, an open competition is emerging, where the possibility of a change of power is also real.
