Dr. Tasnim Jara, the joint convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), and Dr. Tajnuva Jabeen resigned.
He announced his resignation on Facebook on Sunday (28 December).
He wrote, ‘Many of you are thinking, maybe my objection to the alliance with Jamaat is due to historical reasons or women’s issues. What’s even scarier is the process by which it happened. It is being leveled at political strategies, electoral alliances, etc. I’d say it’s planned. It has been arranged so far. It is greater than ideology, it is faith. Just a few days ago, by calling for nominations from all over the country, 125 people were nominated and seats were agreed for 30 people and the rest will not be allowed to be elected. This decision is sealed. The matter has been pushed to the very end so that no one can even hold an independent election. Tomorrow is the last date for submission of nominations. However, I do not wish to make a separate election at this time. Disown the eyelids by tidying up completely.
He also wrote, “Various news is being published in various newspapers. I am opposing the alliance for fear of losing the nomination. I wrote a few days ago, if my seat is negotiated, I will not be elected; I will fight no matter how tough the opponent is. Dil brothers of their group are writing a lot on their behalf why and how this alliance. But the decision of any General Meeting, EC Meeting was not such that in case of an alliance, the candidate should sit in the remaining seats. And in the rest of the constituencies, the Jamaat will have to campaign for the election. Agreement on 70 seats of Charmoni Pir with Jamaat. And in 30 seats of the party born from the popular uprising.
Tajnuva writes, ‘I am one of those who have been in the party since the NCP has been talking about the Constituent Assembly, the Second Republic, moderation, women, and different ethnicities. I am a founder member of this party. Naturally very upset. But I have no honorable option but to leave this team. A lot of people will say that it is a sign of apolitical, immaturity by leaving the party at a bad time. Just bullshit. Just say thisCheating would make sense if I were an outsider. But the minus politics that one top leader does with another top leader is terrible. They are so busy doing politics among themselves that they will never be able to do a new moderate pro-Bangladesh politics for the country. Everyone says that politics is long, there is a long way to go – right. But NCP does not own that policy. The leaders created controversy after controversy and called it a revolution, and those of us who actually held the NCP’s principles were given the sentimental label. From the 28 February declaration to the last debate of The Daily Star, how much the top leaders understand, will be compared in time.
He writes, ‘If I had to do that old empty bully politics, I would have done it with the old party, why the new one? Coming back to the issue of alliance with Jamaat—if the NCP had stood with a distinct identity, it would have had no difficulty in a political alliance with anyone. That would be 5 years later, why exactly in the first election? But gradually all options are eliminated, so that there is no other option but Jamaat. Many have been skillfully brought here as hostages. Anyway, it’s not a political trick — it’s the plan.’
He also wrote, ‘After this writing, many attacks will come on me, and there will be attempts to denigrate my character. But sure to myself—I came to do politics with them, not against them. I’m supposed to be racing to submit my nomination today, and I’m sitting here writing this. Jot will be 1.5 months, then will bounce back in the middle – true. Duplicity and hypocrisy will start again. Those who talk about accountability, make it minus if they do it themselves. I’ve never done politics before, right? But who did national politics before? People are looking at the NCP—it is going in the wrong direction. Those of us who have tried, are giving up one by one, as if this energy were expended in formation. Now I am eating Kalur’s ox.
He writes, ‘I don’t feel good about leaving like this. But I can’t accept leadership like Havaitta who did not want this country, this Parliament, to want to become MP in the beginning or to become MP for their welfare. BNP in alliance with this Jamaat was out of power for 17 years. There NCP is called another shop of Jamaat, then why not establish your identity first? 3 ministers were not in power – could not.
He also writes, ‘Being at the center of power can be done with strategy, but it takes competence to build an organization. Those who are leaving NCP are actually the ones who have done New Settlement politics. But we have to leave. Being at the party and not getting any show cause, wanting to leave with integrity is called “non-political”. However, how many leaders have broken the integrity of the party numerous times in a few months – but they are leaders with millions of followers, and everything is valid.
He also wrote, ‘There will be a lot of positive PR due to the election. But I am sure – these are not New Deal, these are not moderate politics. The July spirit is not practiced here, it is used. Those who would raise questions have been stopped—so the hypocrisy can continue.’
He writes, ‘Another issue – BNP can win the No Vote in the referendum, so this strategy to prevent that – is being talked about. But the question is, why should NCP be limited to only 30 seats to prevent that? Look at the political background of 60–70% of the list that is circulating.’
He wrote, ‘I thought I would resign when the official announcement came. The last hope is over. It was confirmed yesterday that the alliance has been sealed. Again, not the alliance, but the process of the alliance is the key factor. Disbelief is the main thing.
He also wrote, ‘I have resigned from NCP today. It is with a broken heart that I cannot participate in the upcoming National Parliament Election. Today my mother was coming from Chattogram on the occasion of my election – I was forced to take this decision.’
He wrote, ‘I will return the donation sent to you one by one. Give time will refund every taka. Thank you for your support.
At the end, he wrote, ‘I have never done politics before. July-Taking to the streets was for change. That effort will continue until death. A moderate pro-Bangladesh New Settlement is left vacant—I will try to fill it. Time will tell the rest.
