
Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Chairperson of the BNP (Bangladesh Nationalist Party), Khaleda Zia, passed away. He was 80 years old at the time of his death.
BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed confirmed this to the BBC.
According to the party, Khaleda Zia died while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital, Dhaka, at 6:00 AM on Tuesday, 30 December.
He was under treatment in that hospital for the last 1 month after suffering from Kidney, Heart disease, and Pneumonia.
According to BNP, Mrs. Zia’s death was attended by his son and BNP Acting Chairman Tareque Rahman, daughter-in-law Zubaida Rahman, granddaughter Zaima Rahman, and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir among other family members.

Since then, concerns about the former Prime Minister’s health condition have spread at all levels of the party. There are numerous rumors circulating about his current condition on social media.
Prayer Mahfils were organized by BNP and other political parties in different parts of the country to wish Khaleda Zia well-being.
In the last few days, several advisers of the government went to the hospital and inquired about the physical condition of the BNP Chairperson.
Leaders of almost all political parties of the country also visited Evercare Hospital to inquire about Khaleda Zia’s condition.
Incidentally, Khaleda Zia was rushed to the hospital on 23 November due to increased breathing problems.
Earlier on 21 November, he felt discomfort after getting into the car to attend the Armed Forces Day function.
He was suffering from complications related to Liver Cirrhosis, Arthritis, Diabetes, Kidney, Lung, and Eye for a long time.
He was treated for COVID-19 in May 2021 while staying at his residence in Dhaka. Then he had to get treatment in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) due to increasing difficulty of breathingThen in June 2024 Pacemaker was implanted in his Heart. Even then he was suffering from various complex diseases including Heart, Kidney, and Liver, which made his physical condition more complicated.
He already had 3 blocks on his Heart and had a Ring installed earlier. In addition, in June 2024, a doctor was brought from abroad and his liver was treated with the Portosystemic Anastomosis method.
On 8 February 2018, the court sentenced Khaleda Zia to 5 years in prison in the Zia Orphanage Trust Corruption Case during the Awami League era. He was then under special treatment in prison first and then in a hospital. He was also sentenced in another corruption case.
Later, he was released under special conditions through Executive Order and moved to the Gulshan residence.
After the political change in August 2024 6 August President’s Executive Order-R-He was completely released from all penalties.
