Bangladesh Premier League (2026) postponed! Director and BPL Governing Council Member Secretary Iftekhar Rahman Mithu confirmed the matter on Thursday (January 15) evening.
After the Sylhet phase, the Dhaka phase matches were supposed to be played from today. However, in an unexpected incident, the country’s cricket field is unbalanced. After the first match, the second match of the day was also postponed. There is now uncertainty about the remaining matches in the league. Meanwhile, director Iftekhar Rahman Mithu has confirmed that BPL has been suspended indefinitely. That is, there is no guarantee when the tournament will be held again.
The heat has spread in the country’s cricket mainly around the controversial comments made by director M Nazmul Islam to the media yesterday. He was asked about the World Cup issue, whether the players will be compensated if they do not participate in the event. While replying, the director said, ‘This question (of compensation) cannot be raised. Because we are spending so much on them, going to different places and they are not able to do anything, until today we have been able to bring a world title? How much have we been able to do in a place? We can then say every time that you are not able to play, we will take the responsibility for what we are spending on you. Give it back.’
They expressed their anger at making such comments about the cricketers even as parents. Yesterday Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) gave an ultimatum to Nazmul to resign. They also warned that they will not enter the field until the director resigns. Due to this, the first match of the day was postponed.
The cricketers held a press conference instead of going to the field. They said that BCB has asked them for 48 hours. But they want assurance. CWAB president Mohammad Mithun said in the afternoon press conference, “We will go to the field on one condition, if they come to you from BCB and make a commitment that; Well we guarantee within 48 hours this guy won’t be BCB-in If any then the cricketers will not be held responsible for the suspension of the game and BCB will take full responsibility for it. Under these conditions, we can return to the field again. If it comes official announcement from BCB. We have already contacted them about it, but have not received any confirmation.
Before the end of their press conference, BCB informed through a circular that Nazmul has been exempted from all activities of BCB including the finance committee. But the cricketers did not lose their minds. They were adamant in demanding Nazmul’s resignation as director. BCB’s explanation was that since Nazmul had been elected as a director, he could not be sacked against his will.
It was rumored that the second match would be held. Rajshahi Warriors and Sylhet Titans were ready. But later it is known from the field that the second match will not happen. Then BCB will hold a meeting with the franchise owners at 8 pm to make further decisions about the tournament. But before that, BCB decided to suspend BPL indefinitely. The future of BPL 2026 is uncertain.
