Former interim government advisor Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan sees the shooting of Inqilab Mancha convener Sharif Osman Hadi as a planned attack on the leadership of the July Uprising.
This leader of the July Uprising said, ‘We have seen what has happened in Bangladesh in the last 2 days. Just as the Pakistani Occupation Forces wanted to demoralize the country after the prospect of defeat, the defeated forces of 24, the fascist forces are targeting the leaders of the July Mass Uprising to make the country leaderless after the defeat. Osman Hadi was shot dead as part of it. He is now fighting for life or death.
On the occasion of Shaheed Intellectuals Day, Asif Mahmud, who is now preparing to contest the parliamentary elections, said these things to reporters after paying floral tributes at Rayerbazar Boddhobhumi Memorial on Sunday morning.
Osman Hadi, active in the July Uprising, was attacked in Bijoynagar last Friday afternoon while campaigning to become an independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 seat. 2 people on a motorcycle shot him and fled. Osman Hadi, who was shot in the head, is currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka’s Evercare Hospital in a critical condition.
Osman Hadi’s supporters blame the Awami League, which was ousted in a mass coup last year, for the attack. The interim government sees the attack on potential candidate Osman Hadi as a conspiracy to derail the 13th National Parliamentary Election and referendum schedule. BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and Jatiya Nagorik Party condemned the attack and promised to counter any conspiracy unitedly.
Asif Mahmud said, “We have come to know that not only Osman Hadi, but many others have been kept on the hit list. We want to make it clear, as in 1971, that the conspiracy of the occupying forces and their domestic allies did not succeed. In the same way, this time also, no conspiracy of the allies of defeated fascism will succeed.
Like Osman Hadi, Asif Mahmud has also declared to be an independent candidate. He wants to contest from the Dhaka-10 seat. Asif Mahmud, coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, who led the July Movement, was sworn in as an adviser to the interim government. He resigned on December 10 after deciding to participate in the elections.
Asif Mahmud visited Rayerbazar Boddhobhumi Memorial as an Independent Member of Parliament candidate on Shaheed Intellectuals Day. He said, with the expectation that the Liberation War took place, even after 54 years the receipts are very low. That is why the July Uprising took place in 2024.
