Several sub-channels of the world-renowned music channel MTV are set to close later this year. Paramount Global has announced that it will close the following five channels on MTV: MTV 80s, MTV 90s, MTV Music, Club MTV, and MTV Live, effective December 31, 2025.
Why this decision?
The company said the audience’s habits have changed drastically. Now most people enjoy songs and music videos on YouTube, Spotify, or other streaming platforms instead of television. As a result, the audience of traditional music television is rapidly decreasing.
In addition, Paramount Global plans to reduce the cost overall. Their goal is to save about $ 500 million in the coming years. As part of that policy, these five channels are being closed.
MTV started in the United States in 1981. In those days it was a cultural center of the younger generation – music videos, fashion, and pop culture. However, over time MTV gradually leaned towards reality shows, drama, and entertaining content instead of music videos.
What’s going on now?
The original MTV channel will continue to broadcast, but there will be no more music videos as before. Instead, the company will emphasize the reality show and non-screen programming.
According to media analysts, this decision is not just business – it is symbolic. MTV is the organization from which the concept of ‘music television’ was born. The same network is turning away from music todayWhich reveals the change in the whole industry.
