Democratic Party candidate Zohran Mamdani has been elected the new mayor of New York, United States. He defeated Andrew Cuomo, the former governor of New York State, and an independent candidate. Mamdani’s victory marks New York’s first Muslim mayor.
Andrew Cuomo lost to Mamdani for the second time. Earlier, this veteran politician lost to Mamdani in the Democratic Party primary last June.
Mamdani’s victory is being hailed as a success for the Democratic Party’s progressive wing. The victory comes at a time when Democrats are divided on how to deal with President Donald Trump at the national level.
His wife is a Syrian-born United States artist named Rama Duaiji. He was born in Texas. Later moved to Rama – New York City for education. Rama’s age is 28 years. She is the first woman of the Gen-Z generation to become the First Lady of New York.
Trump himself is from New York. He called Mamdani a ‘Communist’ and said that if Mamdani won, he would take control of New York City.
Voting for the mayoral election in New York began at 6:00 AM local time yesterday Tuesday, ending at 9:00 PM local time. After this, the counting of votes started.
Eric Adams, the incumbent mayor of New York City, also ran for a second term as an independent candidate. But he dropped out of the race last September, later endorsing independent candidate Cuomo. Curtis Sliwa was the Republican Party candidate in this contest.
