International Crimes Tribunal-1 has ordered Sheikh Hasina to be executed for crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising.

Former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan was also sentenced to death. Another accused, former IGP of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, has been sentenced to 5 years’ imprisonment.

The 3-member International Crimes Tribunal-1 headed by Justice Golam Mortuza Mojumder announced the verdict on Monday. The other two members of this tribunal are Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury. The verdict began at 12:30 PM and ended at 2:54 PM.

Among the 3 accused in the case, Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman are absconding. Both are now staying in India.

Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, the only accused arrested in the case, confessed his guilt and testified as an “Approver” in the tribunal.

The State Prosecution has repeatedly said that Sheikh Hasina was the mastermind, commander, and superior commander of all the crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising.

Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun said in his deposition that the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ordered the direct use of “lethal weapon” to suppress the anti-discrimination student movement. She received this instruction from Sheikh Hasina on 18 July through the then Home Minister Asaduzzaman.

According to the investigation report, 1,500 innocent, unarmed students were killed and 30,000 were injured in July-August 2024 using lethal weapons on the orders of Sheikh Hasina.

Prosecution seeks the death penalty for Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman. Confiscated their properties and also demanded a handover between the families of the July martyrs and the injured July warriors. Former IGP Mamun has revealed the truth as an approver – this is what the Prosecution says 5 complaints
